There has as yet been confusion about the use of the monogram 'HF' and the attribution of that oeuvre to a specific figure, for it was used by various artists along the Upper Rhine at the beginning of the sixteenth century. Among them was the painter and woodcarver Hans Franck, who was active in Strasbourg and Basel; however, virtually nothing is known about his life and his artistic career.
