Pauline Kowarzik

Pauline Kowarzik (née Fellner) was a pupil of Ottilie W. Roederstein and Marie Bertuch’s in Frankfurt and studied with Raphaël Collin in Paris in circa 1892 / 93. As a painter she celebrated exhibition successes in Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich, and New York. After the death of her second husband—the sculptor Josef Kowarzik, who taught at the Städelschule—in 1911, she continued her training with the painter and graphic artist Heinrich Campendonk in Berlin and travelled to Japan. She was the first woman to be appointed, in 1916, to the purchasing committee of the Municipal Gallery in the Städel Museum. She bequeathed her own eminent collection of contemporary German and French art to the Städel in 1926.
