Born in 1598 in Abbeville (Lorraine). Trained as an engraver, draughtsman, and painter. In 1624 journeyed to Rome, where he worked closely with Simon Vouet, producing numerous engravings after his paintings. Returned to Paris in 1636, where he resided in the Louvre as 'Graveur du Roi'. Through his connections with such leading artists as Charles Le Brun and Pierre Mignard, he came into contact with the most important artistic trends in Paris at the time of Mazarin and the early Louis XIV. Died in Paris in 1688.
