Roxy Paine was born in New York in 1966. He attended the Santa Fe University of Art and Design in New Mexico from 1986 to 1987, and then transferred to the Pratt Institute in New York to study painting and sculpture. By the early 1990s Roxy Paine had become internationally recognised, and his works were being presented around the world. In 2009 he was given a solo show at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. In his varied works Paine frequently focuses on the relationship between civilisation and nature, integrating organic processes. He is particularly known for his life-size steel trees and his machines that create sculptures or pictures. Paine lives and works in Brooklyn and Treadwell, New York.
