Jacopo Robusti (Comin), called Tintoretto (Venice 1518/19-1594 Venice), was independent beginning in 1539. Paintings for S Maria dell'Orto (ca. 1546) and brotherhood buildings (Scuola Grande di San Marco, from 1548; Scuola di San Rocco, 1565-1567, 1575-1588) established him as a leading master. In 1588 he was commissioned to paint the monumental 'Paradise' in the Sala del Maggior Consiglio in the Doge's Palace.
