About the Work
In Jessica Stockholder’s installations, art and everyday life meet. She usually composes her work out of everyday materials. The compositions link together individual elements that have nothing in common: here, yellow construction lights, a plastic tub, and faux fur. Colour overrules the hierarchy of things and creates a connective order. Stockholder deprives individual objects of their autonomous meaning and lends them a new one. Even today, more than 100 years after Marcel Duchamp first declared an everyday object to be a work of art, quite a lot of visitors still find this perplexing.
