About the Work

The kneeling man in the foreground is visibly stunned by the celestial vision unfolding before his eyes. The scene owes its vivid quality to the smooth interplay of pen and brush work. The fluttering robes are deliberately outlined, the light effects brought about by the alternation between shaded areas of differing density. For the first time, this forceful work is here being attributed to Ludovico Carracci, an artist active in Bologna who was long overshadowed by his cousin Annibale.
