About the Work

The artist initially made a pencil drawing of the standing figure of a hermit reading on the verso (inv. no. 1009V Z). On the other side of the sheet, he took the contour of that figure as a point of departure for a bearded old man, perhaps a beggar, looking at his hands and evidently counting money. The figure was used in several etchings.
