About the Work
The grid (so-called “squaring”) overlying the drawing would serve as an aid in translating the composition into a painting. It thus tells us that the artist considered the depiction complete. An especially striking feature is the painterly quality achieved by first colouring the paper red and then executing the motif with a brush. Whereas we know of numerous drawings by Passeri—one of Maratti’s most prized pupils—, only few of his paintings have come down to us.
