About the Work

There is something sublimely elegant about the angel’s pose. The androgynous figure is characterized by a winning presence and—its wings stretched high and wide—a decorative quality. A grid known as “squaring” has been drawn on the sheet to prepare it for transfer into the painting medium; today, however, we know of no painted work based on it. Active primarily in Rome, Cristoforo Roncalli was a native of Tuscany.
