About the Work
A sleeper lies on a large broken stone slab, amidst ancient relics, perhaps dreaming of the sunken times, with the water of the fountain improvised from antique monuments flowing underneath him. This buoyant watercolour, which links the peoples' lives with the past, is about the atmosphere of Rome, which Goethe experienced a few years earlier as an "Arcadian" source of inexhaustible artistic inspiration.
