About the Work

The young man is entirely immersed in his endeavour. His hat still on his head, he perches on a rickety wooden crate, hunched over the drawing table. He is evidently in the process of copying the likeness in front of him. Here Jacopo da Empoli’s theme is artistic training with a focus on drawing as its foundation.
