About the Work

Hans Volger studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau. His numerous photos from this period serve us today as important testimonies to the social life at the school. This 1924 portrait depicts his fellow student Bengt von Rosen in Weimar. The top hat and monocle suggest that Volger may have portrayed him in costume in the framework of one of the regular Bauhaus parties. A wide range of different Bauhaus workshops were creatively involved in organizing these events by designing admission tickets, stage sets, invitations, etc. With the aim of eliminating the division between free art and crafts, they made playful use of various artistic forms of expression. Photography was introduced to the Bauhaus curriculum as a subject in 1929.
