About the Work

A standstill prevails in the monumentalised colour slides in Jeff Wall’s light boxes. While the fluorescent light relentlessly seeks to make the boarded-up front transparent within the light box, the photographed window in ‘Blind Window No. 2’ is like a shuttered aperture demarcating motionlessness on the other side. When Wall took to photographing according to principles valid in painting, he was inspired by late Romantic Realism since Delacroix and Géricault, Manet and Millet. He, however, takes the position of a contemporary observer and captures everyday scenes in poetic still images.
