About the Work

Seen from a low vantage point, the bull looks almost like a tacked-on addition to the polder landscape. Barend Hendrik Thier carried out meticulous studies out of doors, directly from nature. Later, back in the studio, he assembled his compositions from the motifs he had thus collected in his sketchbooks.
