About the Work

The drawing was carried out in the context of a major project for the royal Buen Retiro Palace outside of Madrid. On commission from Philipp IV of Spain, more than 34 large-scale works were executed there, depicting scenes from Roman history as well as Roman customs and games. Anielle Falcone was responsible for two of the paintings, of which one portrays a Roman cavalry unit. That painting has many elements in common with the drawing on view here.
