About the Work

Guercino’s drawing is characterized by gripping drama. Whereas Jesus concentrates entirely on breaking the bread, the facial expressions and gestures of his disciples mirror great astonishment. In their companion they recognize the Saviour they believed dead. The composition was also executed as an engraving of the same format and thus widely disseminated. Guercino was an extremely productive draughtsman with a large workshop.
