About the Work
Portraits grouped under the title The Farmer are at the beginning of the famous picture atlas People of the Twentieth Century. Like in most of the representations in this chapter, the Farm Girls are presented outside in their Sunday clothes. As they are wearing the same dress a strange effect is created by the continuous hemline and the ornamental seem. The girls are standing so close that they are hardly distinguishable. They are holding hands, which also mark the centre of the image. Conformity and solidarity – the photographer’s picture seems to be summarizing the rural population with these two terms.
