About the Work

Mythical occupants of the sea romp about on the rear axis of a ceremonial carriage: A water nymph (Naiad) rides a dolphin; Neptune’s companions (Tritons) blow into large conches. According to an old inscription on the sheet, the drawing was long considered a work by Luigi, Bernini’s younger brother. Now, however, it is associated with Johann Paul Schor, an artist from Innsbruck who was active in Rome and worked with Bernini on various occasions.
