About the Work
Figure and background become one in Imi Knoebel's works. In 'Figure II', wood, tiles and sheet iron are combined to form composite pictures. The black square is tilted in Constructivist manner out of the vertical axis. Despite the flat surface, the composition lines in Knoebel's works are not drawn or painted on a carrier, but are real edges between the individual elements. Her works alternate between something very real, like the wooden panels or the tiles, and the abstraction created by the actual combination - either through the craftsmanslike arrangement of individual objects or the serial juxtaposition.
