About the Acquisition
Alexander Berg (1868–1960) came from a family that had lived in Frankfurt since the eighteenth century, and after completing his law studies he established himself there as a lawyer. In 1912 he became a notary, and in 1915 was appointed counsellor of justice. The IG Farben company and Baroness Mathilde von Rothschild were among his many important clients. An avid supporter of cultural causes, he co-founded the ‘Gesellschaft Altfrankfurter in der Welt’ and served in the Städel administration for thirty years. In 1932 he received the Goethe Medal of the City of Frankfurt.
