About the Work
In 1962, a GDR government scholarship enabled Tübke to travel in the Soviet Union. This drawing, executed more than thirty years later, bears witness to how decisive that experience had been for him. In the background we can make out the silhouette of the famous mosques of Samarkand. On the stage in the foreground is a group of men carrying a shrouded corpse: The artist is having himself carried symbolically to his grave. It is the return to a homeland of memory.
