About the Work
In 1961/62, Tübke’s first and most formative journey took him to Moscow and from there to Abkhazia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan. It was in the last-named country that he produced this precisely formulated watercolour. He captured the view of the jagged, cloud-enveloped massifs of Tian Shan with miniature-like accuracy. A Moslem funeral procession makes its way with a coffin from the village in the valley at the left, across the plain, and down to the cemetery.
