About the Work
Aert Schouman was known not only for his animal watercolours, but also for his drawn copies of paintings of the Golden Age. In this case it was evidently a highly appreciated composition by Jan van der Heyden for which Adriaen van de Velde had provided the staffage figures. The original was in a prominent art collection. Thanks to Schouman’s virtuoso handling of the watercolours, the copy can be considered an artwork in its own right.
