About the Work

With a well-wrought combination of pen strokes in brown and shadows applied in grey with a brush, the artist here depicted The Hague’s lively centre, complete with its trees, façades, a fountain, pedestrians and, somewhat at a distance in the background, the tower of the Grote Kerk (Big Church). La Fargue executed various versions of this typical Hague scene, some in color, each populated with different staffage figures. In them he captured not only the place but also its atmosphere.
