About the Work

The economic aftermath of World War I, compulsory crop levies, and extreme drought led to catastrophic famine in Soviet Russia in the spring of 1921. Kollwitz supported the Workers International Relief aid programme with a poster, of which a number of copies also went on sale without the lettering.
