About the Work
The figure’s sensitive rendering goes hand in hand with a skilful variation of colours. The use of red gives the skin of the face, hands and feet a vibrant quality and distinguishes it clearly from the darker passages describing the garments. The artist practised fundamental anatomical details in meticulous individual studies. He later used the figure in the cupola of the Loreto Basilica (Marches), Italy’s second most important pilgrimage destination.
