About the Work
The extensive oeuvre of the Master E.S. includes a relatively large group of non-religious depictions such as this engraving—presumably a betrothal or wedding motif. Lines deeply dug into the plate form the young couple’s contours, delicate strokes model their faces, parallel and cross-hatching, now darker, now lighter, lend the lady’s robes soft pliability and the knight’s armour a metallic glow.
