About the Work
The colours are spread upon the canvas in several overlapping layers, with dynamic gestures and pastose application. The title pays homage to the French writer Alfred Jarry. In his drama King Ubu which premiered in 1896, Jarry created the literary figure of the same name. Through the link between A. Jarry and the landscape created for him, Stöhrer asserts the figurative legibility of his apparently abstract pictorial work. He belonged to the leading artists of the Neue Figuration (New Figuration) in Germany, who achieved a further development of the aesthetic of Informalism.
