About the Work

In the summer months of 1932 to 1943, Schmidt-Rottluff travelled to Rumbke (present-day Rąbka), a little fishing village on Łebsko Lake near the Baltic Sea coast in Pomerania. There he found his motifs in lonely bays and densely wooded areas along the shore, which he usually captured close up with a brush. In this atmospheric watercolour, the artist employed the classical wet-on-wet technique to allow the gentle merging of the paints. He combined these soft colour transitions with prominent lines that underscore the rhythm and expression of the landscape.
