We would be only too glad to learn more about this drawing’s eventful history. Missing sections at the left and behind the figures of the original drawing were later replaced with different paper and drawing by a different hand. The depiction’s theme is the disciples of Emmaus, but the sheet actually comes across more as a “tree portrait”. The attribution to Annibale Carracci at the lower edge has recently been changed in favour of Domenichino, who received his training in the Carracci’s academy.
