About the Work
Johann Georg Grambs, a collector and member of the Städel foundation board, purchased this summer landscape together with its companion piece “Landscape with Coach, near Hilversum” (Inv.-Nr. 3699). Executed in watercolour and body colour, they bear witness to the taste for native landscapes echoing the art of the seventeenth century – a genre widespread in the Netherlands of the late eighteenth. Like Jacob Cats, with whom he occasionally collaborated, Egbert van Drielst had originally trained as a painter of decorative landscape wallpaper.
