About the Work

In the work of the Carracci, the in-depth study of nature took on new meaning. Landscape would soon become established as a genre in its own right. The true subject of the drawing by Agostino on view here is the natural scenery—St Francis, for his part, almost goes under in the densely vegetated environment. He is presumably pictured in the act of setting down the rules of the Franciscan order.
