About the Work
The landscape with two astronomers was produced by a method combining printed graphics and drawing. The background is the counter proof of a woodcut of 1515–1525, executed by Giovanni Britto after a painting by Titian. The scene in the foreground was covered up during the printing process. The artist then reworked the resulting blank spaces, using pen and ink to add the figures of the astronomers by hand. The manner in which the figures are rendered is reminiscent of the style of Giulio and Domenico Campagnola.
