About the Work

One of Tübke’s opera magna is the monumental painting for the Peasants’ War Panorama in Bad Frankenhausen. Here again, he conceived the work as an apocalyptic parable of the world. The world judge is depicted as a harlequin floating on his back with a lily in his left hand and a sword in his right. He is surrounded by demonic visages reminiscent of the imagery of Belgian artist James Ensor. The drawing is not a study for the painting but a repetition with which the artist reassured himself of his composition.
