About the Work

In 1905, Kirchner produced a series of seven woodcuts inspired by Richard Dehmel’s novel “Zwei Menschen” (“Two People”) that had come out in Berlin in 1903. The curved lines and clear black-and-white contrast are legacies of the Art Nouveau aesthetic. Yet the depiction of a male nude also reflects the life reform movement’s ideal of a healthy body formed by a natural lifestyle. In the ornamental borders, the artist sought to express the content of the main depiction once again, now purely with abstract lines.
