About the Work
It was only a few years ago that a connection was drawn between this work and a commission for the Carthusian Monastery in Calci near Pisa. At God’s behest, Moses strikes water from a rock to quench the thirst of the Israelites on their exodus from Egypt. The people’s desperation is strikingly expressed in their beseeching gestures and one man’s greedy raising of a bottle to his lips.
