About the Acquisition

The businessman and city councillor Georg Seufferheld (1813–1874) found various ways to foster the interests of the city of Frankfurt and the welfare of its residents. Thus in 1858 he was among the eight brave subscribers – also including Louis Brentano and Albert Varrentrapp – to the founders’ stock of the Frankfurt Zoo. In 1864 he was a member of the committee dedicated to erecting a monument to Friedrich Schiller in Frankfurt. In 1874 he left this very unusual painting to the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in his will.
