About the Work
A woman is lying on a bed with her head turned away from us. Her reddish brown hair, rendered in a surprisingly gestural manner, stands out organically, almost like a wound against the white sheet, the inky black furnishings and the light blue reflections of daylight. Here, Sasnal has depicted the seclusion of a private moment, producing an ambiguous and unsettling effect by not showing the woman’s face. Using photographs as his models, the artist paints everyday situations, often from a highly subjective viewpoint. With compositional simplicity, he creates a reality which we, the viewers, can associate with experiences of our own. At the same time, however, we find ourselves wondering what is actually going on in the painted scene.
