About the Work

Inge Dinand’s portrait of a child is neither glorifying nor charmingly sweet. In this example of the early 1930s, she created an image of childhood in a world that is coming apart at the seams. Even before completing her studies, she was showing her works in exhibitions, for example at the F. A. C. Prestel art dealership in Frankfurt in 1930 and 1932 and the city’s Kunstverein in 1933. That was also the year in which the Municipal Gallery in the Städel acquired her Portrait of a Child as a transfer from the local artists’ support association. It is thus the only painting by a pupil of the Beckmann class to have found its way into the collection before 1945.
