About the Work
Sigmar Polke painted pictures on top of pictures. More specifically, his works consist of various overlapping images. ‘Positive Waterdrops’ visualises a drop hitting a surface of water. The process-oriented quality of the occurrence is illustrated by the painted filmstrip whose frames depict the respective state of the falling drop in both positive and negative form. Polke paints on already existing images and patterns, such as those on decorative fabrics. In the realm of everyday life, entirely new meaning emerges through new combinations and further processing.
