About the Work

It is a ghastly scene that roils the bystanders. Dogs are tearing the corpse of Queen Jezebel (wife of King Ahab of Israel) to pieces as punishment for her wrongdoings. Although the composition of this gripping scene has been thoroughly developed, it bears no relation to any known print or painting. With its generous application of ink and dramatic light effects it points to the influence of Cortona and is therefore attributed to his pupil Ciro Ferri.
