About the Work

On Christmas 1915, Heckel painted a Madonna on high tent squares for the collecting point for wounded soldiers in Ostende. According to a local legend, the Virgin Mary rises from the waves of the sea. The following year, the artist cut the composition in wood. He had the woodcut printed in Bruges in an edition of thirteen and, with Ernst Morwitz (1887–1971), dedicated it to the symbolist painter James Ensor (1860–1949), a resident of Ostende whom the two men greatly admired.
