About the Work

Annibale is without question the best known of the three Carracci, whose drawing and painting school shaped art far beyond Bologna’s boundaries. One of the key elements of their painting reform was the precise observation of nature. This landscape makes a well-rounded and peaceful impression—not even the boat ripples the water’s smooth surface. A detail at the lower right comes as a surprise: a woman crouching down to answer the call of nature.
