About the Work
This rocky landscape shows the unusual intensity and energy of Cézanne's early works. The viewer gazes at a massive rock and is challenged by its intrusive proximity to explore the area. But the sparse nature of this unwelcoming landscape draws the attention to the colours used in the picture: they convey the impression of having stored the warmth of the sun, of weathering and moss. In this way, they express the experience of nature in all its sensuousness and authenticity.
