About the Work

The first impression made by Ernst Wilhelm Nay’s ‘disc paintings’ is one of dynamic movement. The edges are trimmed, so that the pictures seem to point beyond their edges. In this sense, Nay adopted the Abstract Expressionist ‘all-over’ approach. Concurrently with his theoretical reflections, his painting developed towards a two-dimensional abstraction with a rhythmical use of colour. Colour is at the heart of his design principles. In ‘Rotklang’, red, orange and yellow dominate, and there are accents of black and white along with glimpses of green and blue.
