About the Work
The imitation of Netherlandish artists of the seventeenth century was one of the van Strij brothers’ specialities. This drawing is a copy by Abraham van Strij after a painting Jacob had executed in the manner of the Dordrecht landscapist Aelbert Cuyp (1620–1691), who was highly regarded in the eighteenth century. Here Abraham even adopted Cuyp’s drawing style. He did not produce the work as a forgery, but as a tribute to the spirit of the Golden Age in Netherlandish art.
