About the Work
‘Sinus’ features a black form protruding vertically into the picture and flanked by a strong yellow. The colours are garish and luminous, but the colour palette is reduced to a minimum. White is introduced not in the form of paint but by leaving some areas of the prepared canvas blank, so that the painted shapes form a unity with the picture ground. This dynamic late work was strongly influenced by the American hard-edge style and struck a completely new note in German post-war painting.
