About the Work

The sketchbook, dated 1851, with differently coloured pages, documents Ludwig Metz’s stay in Rome during his journey to Italy. With pencil and pen (in brown and grey), and mostly on successive recto pages, he drew landscape and architectural motifs; he seems not to have been interested in the paper colour: an evening mood at Civitella was not recorded on darker, blue paper but on the next blank and therefore yellow page. The strokes of the drawings seem to be set quickly and, yet, are still aimed at details. Especially churches and temples as well as the relationship between nature and architecture appealed to him, sometimes resulting in quite pictorially constructed images.
