About the Work
The sketchbook documents Ludwig Metz’s stay in Greece in 1882, more precisely in the region of Patras on the coast of the Ionian Sea. According to his notes and drawings in the sketchbook, Metz travelled via Corfu. He drew the medieval castle of Patras, built on the ruins of the former acropolis, and the view of the Ionian Sea from multiple perspectives. In addition, there are individual studies of trees, including an agave, but comparatively few detailed architectural studies. Many pages remained blank in the book’s second part. ‒ See the sketchbook SG 2745 on Metz’s journey to Greece in 1870, also to be found in the Städel Museum.
